Highlights of my Risk and decsion-making work

In January 2023, Baruch Fischhoff and I published an article in Issues in Science and Technology with some observations about the challenges of science communication, a discussion of why this is so important to support good decision making, and some ideas for how to address the current gaps. The article can be found here.

In fall 2022, I served as a technical reviewer for the Strategic Science Fund for the Government of Canada.

In spring 2022, I supported the work of the United Kingdom Open Innovation team by serving as an expert on policy-based decision making.

In February 2022, I was the lead author on a perspective article with colleagues Dr. Zachary Collier, Dr. Elisabeth Gilmore and Dr. Ketra Schmitt, laying out a decision-first guide for addressing emerging risks. The article is here. This paper was drawn from a virtual conference held in June 2021, organized by myself and Dr. Collier, and co-hosted by the INFORMS Decision Analysis Society and the Society for Risk Analysis. The idea for the conference was triggered by COVID-19, and some talks focused on that topic, but many other emerging risk areas were also discussed, with the goal of sharing strategies to use when emerging risks are encountered by government agencies. The article summarizes the lessons learned.

In October 2021, Dr. Barbara Kowalcyk, Ashley Crawford and I published a scoping review on risk-based decision making that we had been working on for many years. It finally identified a definition for what “risk-based decision making” means, as well as identifying three variations that can also be pursued, if relevant for the problem. That article is open access, and can be found here.

In fall 2019. I wrote an article for ORMS, a magazine for INFORMS, about how to bring decision analysis principles to public sector decision making, article is here.

In summer 2019, I was invited to support work that the National Academies were supporting on Biological Weapons of Mass Destruction as part of United Nations work. I served as an expert on decision making frameworks and risk-based thinking. The workshop that was held lead to a publication, which can be found here.

From 2017- 2018, I served as an appointed member of the Ohio State Board of Education. In that role, I was part of the Steering Committee for the Strategic Plan for Education in Ohio, which was released in the summer of 2018. The report can be found here. The collaborative work with a wide range of stakeholders led to a fully comprehensive vision for K-12 education in Ohio.

From 2017-2018, I served as an expert on a National Academies Committee to develop a risk-based framework for Synthetic Biology. I provided expertise in decision-making frameworks and risk-based thinking. The report can be found here. I am the main author for the framework chapter.

In January 2017, I presented at the Academy Health National Policy Conference on Decision Making for Personalized Medicine Tools. Link to the abstract is here, and the presented slides are here. The mental modeling approach was used to reveal clinician decision making around the use of personalized medicine diagnostics. This work was done to provide a framework for understanding what is driving payer reluctance to use genetic diagnostics for clinical care.  The research also explore provider and patient mental models to capture the full picture of the challenges that the field faces in making this diagnostic approach widely used.
